In collaboration with award winning architects and interior designers Cumulus Studios, RMS Traders supplied natural stone tiles for The Symmons Plains project.
The Symmons Plains project combines heritage restoration with functional, contemporary design elements that would complement the original heritage architecture. The new lightweight steel, natural stones and glass insertions reflect the heritage simplicity in style and design while allowing the heritage structures to take prominence in the design. The project activated an entire cluster of buildings, transforming forgotten spaces into active, social additions for the large rural home.
‘The Symmons Plains homestead was established in 1839 by John Arndell Youl, a Tasmanian colonist famous for introducing brown trout to Australia. Seven generations of the Youl family lived and farmed the expansive property until it was sold to our client in 2011. Over the years, the Youl family made a number of ambitious additions to the property, most notably the tennis court, airstrip and the world-class Symmons Plains raceway.’
RMS Traders supplied our Perlino Bianco vein cut limestone tiles to The Symmons Plains project for their incorporation across multiple rooms of the homestead. The Perlino Bianco vein cut limestone is a soft grey honed limestone that is popular amongst architects and interior designers. This limestone can be used both inside and outside as it is durable and easy to maintain. The lushful greys and striking movements within the stone bring timeless elegance to the interior of the homestead.
From the exterior, steel was used to represent the transition between old and new. Similarly, on the inside, the incorporation of natural stone throughout this project has allowed for a gentle transition between the old, restored areas of the building to the new, modernised rooms. While the lightweight steel and glass insertions reflect this simplicity in form and proportion, the cut of the natural stone tiles compliments the flow of light into the high ceiling interior seamlessly flowing from room to room.
The Symmons Plains Project is in the running for an award from the 2020 Tasmanian Architecture Awards- People’s Choice.
